Our Opportunity The Thales Defence Mission Systems Domain is a leading provider of integrated mission solutions to surface ships and submarines, and is the No.1 Naval fleet support and technical services company in Australia. It is also a specialist in the upgrade of naval vessels providing systems and platforms integration capabilities. This role requires the candidate to be responsible for providing Production Engineering support for the General Assembly Production Team, and reports directly to the Production Manager within the Underwater Systems Business Unit. The successful candidate will work as part of a small team of technicians and production staff involved in the manufacture and repair of sonar and electronic equipment in General Assembly. The role requires the person to undertake all tasks required to develop, set up, monitor and maintain the various production tasks. Due to the need to remain competitive to secure future work the person will need to take a primary role in the implementation of continuous improvement strategies with a strong emphasis on LEAN manufacturing. Key Challenges • The candidate needs to be self-motivated and have an ability to achieve targets and meet schedule with minimum supervision. • Needs to be able to manage conflicting demands. • The position requires a practically orientated person who preferably has both mechanical & electrical skills and is willing to work as part of a small team. • Developing a strong “product knowledge” in order to understand the importance of the various aspects of the manufacturing processes. The position will work with the Production Manager, Production Supervisor and the Project Engineer on a day to day basis, with ultimate responsibility being with the Project Manager. In addition, the role will need the person to communicate with staff and Managers on all levels, both internal and external, as the need arises Responsibilities • Ensure that Manufacturing systems and processes are designed to ensure all products can be manufactured in the most cost-effective and LEAN manner whilst ensuring that all aspects of the design requirements are satisfied. • Ensure that all aspects of HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) are maintained throughout the product development and manufacturing phases, and assist in addressing HSE issues raised through internal and external audits. Complete Risk Assessments prior to beginning tasks. • Assist Engineering with prototype manufacturing and qualification testing as part of Concurrent Engineering, advising on manufacturing issues for the best production outcome. • Carry out production set ups, including defining and procuring tools, jigs and equipment; planning efficient production lay outs; training staff; and overseeing first-off production. • Provide comprehensive technical support to production, including resolving production queries and assisting in the interpretation of production documentation. About You You hold the following skills and attributes: · Tertiary qualification in Production or related Engineering disciplines, or a suitable trade background. · Previously held a similar role as a Production Engineer within a mechanical/electrical manufacturing environment. · Thorough understanding of Lean principles and experience in implementing them in a production environment. · Hands-on work experience and practical knowledge of production methods and procedures, equipment, and materials. · Familiar with detailed engineering drawings & schedules, as well as production assembly and test instructions.
