About the team

The Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA), a newly established Commonwealth Agency has a unique opportunity to lead and shape the future of Australia’s expertise in radioactive waste management with a dynamic, multidisciplinary team working together to deliver on the Government’s commitment for the safe and secure management of the nation’s radioactive waste material.

Our ideal candidates

ARWA is building its corporate function as the agency transitions to becoming its own entity in 2022. We are seeking applications from candidates with a strong background in procurement and financial policy to fill two key roles in our finance/procurement team. These role are:

Both roles require:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Australian government finance and procurement practices and a sound understanding of related policies (or relatable experience within a non-government context, ie vendor management / supply chain sourcing)
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, in particular the demonstrated ability to provide sound advice and prepare written reports and briefings.

The Assistant Manager, you will also be a strong people manager, able to support a team to achieve goals and deliver an ambitious work program.

What you will do

The Assistant Manager, Finance and Procurement will work with all teams to support ARWA’s people. You will lead a small team responsible for the delivery of business planning and finance and procurement functions within the agency. This includes financial statement preparation, treasury and internal budgets including reporting and monitoring, as well as preparation and submission of portfolio budget statements and estimates.

The Procurement Officer will co-ordinate and deliver procurement and contract management activities from inception to completion, including:

  • providing specialist advice about procurement processes, supplier evaluation, qualification and selection making sure ongoing compliance with Commonwealth Procurement Rules
  • developing tender documentation
  • drafting work orders and contract variations
  • recruitment of contractors
  • managing delivery of evaluation processes and arranging relevant internal approvals
  • on-boarding support to new contractors and suppliers and
  • periodic status reporting on procurement related activities.

Both roles require a comprehensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative, financial and administrative frameworks (eg PGPA Act), government decision-making processes and agency guidelines and regulations.


To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Security Clearance

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.


This process is being used to fill immediate APS Level 6 and Executive Level 1 vacancy within Corporate Services. A merit pool may be established and used to fill similar future vacancies for 12 months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Gazette.
